Adding Tasks

Submitting tasks

If you find yourself reading through all of the tasks available on SFØ and come up with something you think should be added to the gaming pool, you can do it yourself. First you should search through the graveyard of retired tasks to see if a similar task has already seen its day. If not, simply click on the updates link beneath your player name in the upper right hand corner. Now that you are on your player page click the "add task" link in the blue nav bar. Be sure to fill out the task proposal as thoroughly as possible to make sure it has a chance of being accepted. If you want the task to be completable by anyone, don't select any group for the task, rather than selecting all groups.

Once your task is submitted it will be added to the game pending approval by a rotating board of SF Cops of the Month, children, the cast of Jurassic Park, Nasia, and Kristofer Leo Ghott

To !!! The Good Task

A well-written task is clear (or, at least, clear in its open-endedness) and succinct. Generally, if you want to add an example of a completion, you should go back and try to clarify the description instead. There's a large catalog of retired tasks - you might want to see if something similar was already suggested at some point. Beyond that, here are some points to consider (going against any of these doesn't man your task will never be approved, however):

  • "Meta Tasks" - e.g. "Do four tasks in an hour" - are frequently submitted, but generally don't get added.
  • Computer-only tasks (e.g. Photoshopping, emailing someone) tend to be at a disadvantage, too.
  • Don't worry too much about being Location-specific. Brilliant SFZero players will find a way to do your London task in Chicago.
  • Speaking of which, brilliant SFZero players seem to like a little room for interpretation - think about whether a detail of the task really makes it better, or just restricts the completions.
  • Zen is great, but there can only be so many "Consider the lobster" tasks at one time.
  • Thinking about something political? Oblique cheekiness seems to work better, task-wise, than direct vitriol.
  • No one minds a task with a whiff of illegality to it.

The Vagaries of Approval

  • Tasks cycle in and out at some point every Thursday.
  • The mods generally take a lot of liberty in editing tasks. If you're not happy with an edit to your task, let someone know.
