Masquerade

With the flexibility of the player photograph page, as well as the player account page allowing edits to the player name and player profile, a strong tradition of masquerading has developed in SF0's player community.

Name Masquerades/Aliases

The simplest kind of masquerade is when a player changes their photograph and/or the player name on the account page. Uploading a new photograph to the Player Photograph task, and moving it to the first of the list of photos, changes the player's appearance to other visitors to the site. The account name is static, but the player name can be altered as often as players wish. Some players change names and photos regularly. The reasons include--but certainly aren't limited to-- doing it for the amusement of others, an effort to reflect a mood, to make a political statement, to celebrate an accomplishment, complete a task, pay tribute to another player, and random whim. The most prolific user of aliases is probably Blueberrymascarpone (aka Spar, Shaliko, LanKisser, Doppleganger, and many, many, many more). During Glasnost he began play as Spar and changed his alias on a near-weekly basis, according to a pattern known only to him.

Masquerade Task

In the Impossible Exchange Era, a masquerade task was created by OliverX to conduct into the praxis the creative energies of this masquerading tendency. It required a player to find a way to masquerade as another player. It was very popular. The results were usually comical, with players being confused by other players' efforts, or by players colluding to exchange personae simultaneously. Several players also began the tradition of tribute masquerades.

Tribute Masquerades

In Impossible Exchange, a group of Minneapolis-based players gathered together and dressed up as pirateymonkey. They changed their player photographs simultaneously, resulting in a sudden proliferation of persons in pirateymonkey attire. This has led to return-tributes (pirateymonkey and cunninglinguist, among others, have masqueraded as InkTea, for example) and to occasional outbursts of appreciation.
